The emanation of the goddess Tara, the “mother of liberation”, is thought to originate from the tears of compassion shed by the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara or Chenrezig. Tara offers protection from all negativities and fears. She is invoked and prayed to when encountering obstacles, health issues, in times of distress or hardship and when one wishes for success or wisdom in dealing with difficult situation. It is said that even through simply remembering Her, the common and excellent siddhis are bestowed.
According to His Eminence the late Chogay Trichen Rinpoche, it is said that at the end of an aeon, when hardships and calamities increase, mantras and pujas are very essential. For the affected persons or places, if pujas, prayers and rituals of certain female deities are performed, the diseases, calamities and disturbances will be pacified and resolved. The practice of Tara (Drolma) is most important and essential of all practices during such times, the recitation of the Twenty-one Praises to Tara is especially effective.
Every year, Sakya Nunnery performs several 100,000 Twenty-one Praises to Tara accumulation to avert diseases, calamities and disturbances for the benefit of all beings. In particular during March each year, this prayer intensive is conducted specially for all the sponsors who help the nunnery. We encourage all friends and sponsors to support our 100,000 Twenty-one Praises pujas whenever they can, for the sake of their families and friends and for all those people and places devastated by calamities and epidemics.
